Five years after the original Linea PB, La Marzocco rebuilt it. The Linea PBX keeps the PB's footprint and service familiarity but changes the thing that matters most: instead of one shared coffee boiler feeding both groups, each group gets its own independent saturated boiler. Two groups, two brew temperatures, running side by side.
What the X actually changes
- Independent saturated boilers: a dedicated 1.3 L brew boiler per group means you can run a light Ethiopian on group one at 94°C and a chocolatey blend on group two at 91°C, simultaneously, with no compromise on either. On a single-boiler machine that is simply not possible.
- Dynamic preheater: incoming water is brought up to temperature before it reaches the brew boilers, which is what keeps the PBX steady at the peak of the morning rush rather than sagging as demand outruns recovery.
- Pro Touch steam wands as standard: high-performance wands that stay cool to the touch — fewer burns, and milk does not bake onto the wand between jugs. On the PB these are an upgrade; here they are fitted from the factory.
- Barista lights as standard: integrated LED lighting on the group area so you can actually see the extraction and the cup. This is also the visual tell that distinguishes a PBX from a PB across a room.
- 7 L steam boiler with dual PID: independent PID on the steam circuit alongside the per-group brew control, so steam pressure and brew temperature are set separately and hold separately.
- Digital display: temperature readout, shot timers and intuitive programming, with firmware updates over USB.
Choosing your configuration
- AV (Auto-Volumetric): programmable volumetric doses per group with flow-meter control. Every shot stops at the same yield regardless of who is on bar.
- ABR (Auto Brew Ratio): adds precision scales built into the drip tray. Programme a brew ratio — say 1:2 — and the machine dispenses to reach that ratio by mass rather than volume. It removes the single largest source of shot-to-shot variance in a busy bar, and it is the reason most multi-roaster and competition-minded sites specify ABR.
Best suited to
Specialty cafés running more than one coffee on espresso, multi-roaster concepts, training academies, and any bar that has outgrown a single brew temperature.
SmartSteam is available as an option, adding a temperature sensor to the steam wand that cuts pressure automatically at your target milk temperature. Cup warmer, high legs and personalised RAL colours are available to special order.
